Moulin takes France demand lead with an FDI of 8.5

Guillaume Canet’s Karma moved into second as former leader Ducobu et le fantôme de Saint-Potache fell to fourth.

  • Moulin rose 5.9 points in a week and moved from twelfth to first.
  • Karma has an FDI of 6.7 and now sits in second place.
  • The Phantom of the Opera climbed to fifth with Unlock tickets sold over the past week.

Moulin is now France’s most in-demand film, overturning last week’s order as of November 4. The SEATmio Film Demand Index (FDI) is a film’s share, in percent, of all tickets SEATmio tracks in France: tickets for the last 7 days of screenings plus advance tickets for upcoming screenings. All ticket counts cited here are rounded SEATmio estimates.

László Nemes’s history drama, from the director of Son of Saul and Sunset, has an FDI of 8.5 after rising 5.9 points in a week. The local production climbed from twelfth to first, passing Ducobu et le fantôme de Saint-Potache, Les Misérables and Karma among others. Its subject gives the move extra weight: Gilles Lellouche stars in the wartime story of Jean Moulin’s confrontation with Klaus Barbie.

France’s current race is being led by local productions, with Moulin, Karma, Les Misérables and Ducobu et le fantôme de Saint-Potache holding the first four places. Guillaume Canet’s thriller Karma, from the director of Tell No One and Little White Lies, has an FDI of 6.7 after falling 1.4 points, but still moved into second by overtaking Ducobu and Les Misérables. Les Misérables, Fred Cavayé’s historical drama with Vincent Lindon and Tahar Rahim, also has an FDI of 6.7 after falling 3.1 points.

Ducobu et le fantôme de Saint-Potache, the previous leader, is now fourth with an FDI of 4.7 after falling 5.3 points. The Élie Semoun family comedy sold Unlock tickets over the past week and has Unlock advance tickets. Karma sold Unlock over the same period, while Les Misérables sold Unlock and still trails Karma in the overall index because the FDI also includes advance demand.

Last weekend, Moulin opened on top with Unlock tickets. Les Misérables followed with Unlock after falling 42% from the previous weekend, and Karma took Unlock after falling 33%. Ducobu et le fantôme de Saint-Potache added Unlock after falling 39%, while The Phantom of the Opera also opened, taking Unlock.

The next layer of the market is moving quickly. The Phantom of the Opera climbed from eighteenth to fifth with an FDI of 3.8 after rising 2.3 points, while Hope rose 2.6 points to seventh. Avengers: Doomsday is already sixth, with an FDI of 3.7 and Unlock advance tickets for its December 16 release.

Among films opening in the next 21 days, Stray Kids World Tour 'RUN IT' LIVE VIEWING leads with an FDI of 1.1 ahead of its November 7 release. The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, from Francis Lawrence, opens November 18 with an FDI of 0.9. Rammstein – Live in Mexico City follows for November 6 with an FDI of 0.3.
